Most research has focused on uva ursi’s urinary antiseptic component, arbutin, which typically composes 7–9% of the leaves. However, crude plant extracts are much more effective medicinally than isolated arbutin. Uva ursi is reported to be a good diuretic and especially active against E. coli.
Uva ursi is used as a diuretic, urinary antiseptic for bladder and kidney infections, hemorrhoids, and womb problems (very good as a postpartum remedy to prevent infections). It strengthens the heart muscle and helps disorders of the spleen, liver, pancreas, and small intestines. It is good for female disorders.
