Flora Ginkgo Biloba. Ginkgo Biloba has been documented in Chinese medicine for nearly 5000 years and in the last 30 years, more than 300 studies have given clinical evidence that ginkgo prevents and benefits many problems throughout the entire body. Ginkgo has gained recognition as a brain tonic that enhances memory due to its positive effects on the vascular system, especially in the cerebellum. It is also used as a treatment for vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and a variety of neurological disorders and circulation problems. Ginkgo may help to counteract the effects of aging, including mental fatigue and lack of energy.
Each Vegetarian Capsule Contains:
Ginkgo Biloba leaf (standardized extract 50:1) - 60mg
- supplying 14.4mg ginkgo flavon glucosides and 3.6mg total terpene lactones.
Adults consume 2 capsules per day.
Patients taking anti-coagulants or undergoing aspirin treatment should consult with a licensed natural medical professional before taking ginkgo biloba.
Improved Brain Function
Ginkgo is most well known for its ability to improve short-term memory by increasing blood flow to the brain and throughout the body`s network of blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the organ systems. It increases metabolism efficiency, regulates neurotransmitters, and boosts oxygen levels in the brain.6 Ginkgo is often used to treat elderly persons with Alzheimer`s and other symptoms of cerebral insufficiency, which is a general term for a collection of symptoms that include difficulties of concentration and memory, absentmindedness, confusion, lack of energy, depressive mood, anxiety, dizziness, tinnitus, and headache.
Alzheimers And Dementia
Clearly, Ginkgo could be an important herbal contribution for people who are beginning to experience deterioration in their cognitive function. Dementia in the elderly is usually related to inadequate circulation and Gingko could delay this deterioration and enable such people to maintain a normal life. The earlier the treatment begins, the better the prognosis, especially in Alzheimer`s. Even in advanced cases, however, improvement has been seen almost immediately, steadily improving over many months.
Studies have confirmed that ginkgo increases blood flow to the retina, and can slow retinal deterioration resulting in an increase of visual acuity. It also improves circulation in the extremities relieving cold hands and feet, swelling in the limbs and chronic arterial blockage. Ginkgo has been used in other disorders such as diabetic peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud`s syndrome, hemorrhoids and varicose veins. It can also aid in the treatment of insufficient circulation and complications from stroke and skull injuries. Ginkgo`s beneficial effects on the circulatory system also can be of benefit in the treatment of eye and ear disorders.
Free radicals have been implicated in the aging process and degenerative disease. The flavonoids of ginkgo, including quercetin, are extremely potent oxygen scavengers. Possessing a particular affinity for the central nervous system as well as the adrenal and thyroid glands, Ginkgo is ideal for protecting the heart, blood vessels, and brain against the destructive impact of free radicals. In one in vitro study, Ginkgo showed the ability to destroy free radicals, blocking their formation and inhibiting membrane lipid peroxidation, a destructive effect for which free radicals are partly responsible.
One of the side effects of diabetes is the gradual impairment of eyesight, due to free oxygenated radicals damaging the retina. Ginkgo was shown to significantly prevent the onset and severity of this damage and to improve visual acuity in patients suffering from senile macular degeneration. Ginkgo was found to have a protective effect against argon laser induced damage of retinal cells by capturing free radicals and preventing significant tissue damage.
