Bioflavonoids include anthocyanins from bilberries, ellagic acids from strawberries, curcumin from turmeric, catechins from green tea, proanthocyanidins from grapes, and quercetin from onions, to name a few.
Vitamin C, for its part, is a fundamentally central antioxidant capable of quenching both reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species of free radicals. It is also watersoluble, greatly diminishing any chance of toxicity.
A milestone in the research and development of a possible synergy between Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids was uncovered at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Researchers there observed that the vitamin C in the native amla plant was over 10 times more bioavailable than an equal amount of vitamin C from synthetic sources. It was determined that the presence of tannins (another flavonoid) in the amla fruit protected and enhanced the activity of vitamin C. Further research has revealed that flavonoids perform this action by continuously recycling oxidized vitamin C back into its active form, allowing it to quench more free radicals before the process finally oxidizes it for good.
