5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan has been traditionally used to treat insomnia and depression. The body produces its own supply of 5-HTP from tryptophan, an amino acid found in high-protein foods such as chicken, fish, beef, and dairy products. The supplement form is a compound extracted from the seeds of the African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is a mood enhancing chemical that raises serotonin levels which can increase pain tolerance, induce sleep, and affect how hunger is perceived. To minimize possible side effects, begin with a low dose of 5-HTP (50 mg three times a day) for one week and then increase the amount to 50 mg twice a day for one week, and so on by 50 mg increments each week, up to the dose recommended for your condition. For the quickest absorption, take 5-HTP on an empty stomach. It is best to read product label directions for guidelines on the dosage recommended for your specific condition.

Known side effects of 5-HTP are generally mild and may include, constipation, gas, nausea, drowsiness, or a decreased sex drive. Combining 5-HTP with conventional antidepressants, such as Prozac, Wellbutrin, or Effexor, may cause anxiety, confusion, increased heart rate, excessive perspiration, and diarrhea. Do not try 5-HTP within four weeks of using an MAO inhibitor. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
