its effects on the central nervous system. Magnolia also seems to inhibit the conversion of cortisol to cortisone, while increasing the production of corticosterone, a glucocorticoid, which has anti-inflammatory
properties. This may explain magnolia’s use for asthma. Magnolia may also lower cholesterol production. In addition, Magnolol and Honokiol, active constituents of Magnolia, might enhance cholinergic function in the brain, which could be useful in diseases such as Alzheimer’s. At high doses, these compounds increase acetylcholine release in the hippocampus of the brain, theoretically improving neuronal function.
