The daily trials incidental to modern life have a huge impact on every one of us without exception. The grinding slog of a daily commute, pollution, strenuous exercise, poor diet, and a host of other factors all add up to take a large toll on our health. Herbs can help to reduce the negative effects that these things have on the body. Strest Tea is one soothingly effective answer to the demands of everyday living.

Holy basil - Highly revered in the Indian Ayurvedic tradition as a rasayana , holy basil is an especially effective adaptogen, that is to say, a plant medicine that helps our body`s metabolism to adapt to environmental factors. Herbalists tell us that this plant has a "centering effect" akin to meditation, reducing anxiety and helping a person focus.

Under laboratory conditions of induced nervous tension in rodents, holy basil prevented depletion of brain neurotransmitters and checked enlargement of the adrenal gland while preserving adrenal vitamin C and cortisol content. In addition, pretreatment significantly and dramatically reduced the incidence of aspirin-induced ulcer formation in lab mice. Another author writing on the adaptogenic properties of holy basil concluded that, "A variety of studies using different animal models of stress suggest that sacred basil can ameliorate the physiological responses to stress, thus in effect enabling the body to better cope with stress without becoming `stressed out`."

A randomized, controlled trial using holy basil in 40 people with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent) noted significant declines in blood sugar levels. In the treatment group (2.5 grams per day), average fasting glucose declined from an abnormal 7.47 mmol/l to an ideal level of 5.54 mmol/l after four weeks. The difference between active treatment with holy basil and placebo was highly significant (p < 0.001). No adverse effects were documented.

Cinnamon - Besides being a great-tasting culinary spice, cinnamon has powerful antiseptic and fever-fighting properties. In another exciting development, scientists have discovered a compound in cinnamon that has insulin-like properties. Preliminary research suggests that cinnamon may play a significant role in the natural treatment of diabetes. In addition, renowned botanist James Duke explains that cinnamon contains chemicals known as catechins that relieve nausea. It is also a highly effective digestive herb, helping in the elimination of gas.

Cardamom - While it is, to be sure, a delicious flavouring ingredient, The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia comments that cardamom also strengthens digestion. Cardamom is rich in essential oils, often used for their ability to calm nervousness and reduce irritability.

Cloves - Besides being a digestive aid, this aromatic herb has excellent antimicrobial properties. A recent study suggests that it may in fact help in the prevention of tooth decay. In addition, it is a superb painkiller. Since they are also a rich source of essential oils, cloves are used extensively by aromatherapists in flu or cold formulas, to help fight a variety of viruses and infections, and are effective at the same time as an aid in improving concentration and energy levels.

Ginger - Ginger has been used for millennia both as a food and as a medicine in virtually all major traditional systems of medicine. Through the ages ginger`s most common use has been as a warming digestive stimulant, to relieve spastic conditions of the intestines, colic, gas, bloating and indigestion. Herbalist Christopher Hobbs comments that "ginger is one of the best remedies for... spasms in the stomach or intestines. These spasms can be quite painful and often result from over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system due to stress..." Ginger is also often added to formulas for the relief of painful menstrual periods.

Modern use has focused primarily on ginger`s ability to reduce nausea, an attribute that has been repeatedly confirmed in clinical trials for such conditions as post-chemotherapy, post-surgery, and motion sickness.

Another less known use of ginger is for emotional balance—a use that was popular with naturopathic physician Dr. William A. Mitchell, who writes that, "It is a good anxiolytic that acts like Valium (diazepam). I use it to wean patients from Valium. Like Valium, it acts on the benzodiazepine receptor sites."
