What does CoQ10 have to do with my heart?
Due to its high energy requirements, the heart contains the highest concentration of Co10. Over the past 15 years, research has established a definitive link between CoQ10 deficiency and cardiovascular disease, and related heart disorders (see CoQ10 Levels in Organs by Age). Specifically, studies have suggested that supplemental CoQ10 can reduce the frequency of angina (chest pain) episodes, strengthen the heart muscle, and increase the quality of life and survival rates of people with congestive heart failure.
CoQ10 deficiency may be a predictor of heart conditions. Not only has it been detected in heart failure patients, but the degree of CoQ10 deficiency is correlated to the severity of heart failure! CoQ10 has also been shown to decrease blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure, and to prevent damage to the heart caused by certain cancer drugs. Why is CoQ10 particularly important for people taking heart drugs? It is well known that certain drugs can interfere with CoQ10 synthesis. Of particular concern are cholesterol-lowering Statins (HMG CoA reductase inhibitors), which severely deplete CoQ10 levels to an alarming degree.
