The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It has several functions, the most important being the protection it provides from pathogens found in our environment. Skin can be inflamed for a variety of reasons such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and impetigo. In such conditions, the skin may be red, swollen, blistered, scabbed, scaly, oozing, or itchy. Chronic inflammation is usually the result of the immune system being unable to destroy an invading organism. Azadirachta Indica, also known as Neem, is a plant that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of an extensive range of afflictions. More than 140 compounds have been isolated from different parts of neem. Neem oil has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of an extensive range of afflictions including skin diseases such as urticaria, eczema, and inflammation. Neem possesses immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Curcumin possesses a wide range of health benefits. This extract from turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and can inhibit the growth of abnormal cells.

Calendula ointments have long been used in Europe to treat slow healing cuts and sores. Newer research confirms the usefulness of the plant extract to treat skin conditions. Topical treatment with calendula reduces pain and exhibits antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-parasitic properties. In Germany, the plant is approved for the treatment of poorly healing wounds, mucous membrane inflammation, dermatitis, rashes, bruises, boils and leg ulcers.

Orange Peel is an established anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal agent and contains flavonoids with astringent properties. Astringents tone the skin and help remove excess oil and dead skin cells from the skin surface.

The seeds of Psoralea corylifolia have a long history of use as an Ayurvedic remedy in the treatment of leucoderma and vitiligo, two skin hypopigmentation disorders. Inhibition of this enzyme suppresses prostaglandin production and modifies arachidonic acid metabolism, which leads to an anti-inflammatory effect because arachidonic acid release is a prerequisite for inflammation. Prostaglandins are hormone like substances that modulate inflammation. The enzyme also regulates water and sodium absorption, which may both become unbalanced during chronic inflammation.
