5-HTP

5-HTP (5-HydroxyTryptophan)

5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan has been traditionally used to treat insomnia and depression. The body produces its own supply of 5-HTP from tryptophan, an amino acid found in high-protein foods such as chicken, fish, beef, and dairy products. The supplement form is a compound extracted from the seeds of the African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is a mood enhancing chemical that raises serotonin levels which can increase pain tolerance, induce sleep, and affect how hunger is perceived. Serotonin is found in the brain and central nervous system which has many implications on mood, behavior, and sleep patterns.

5-HTP Uses & Scientific Evidence

5-HTP is used to treat many disorders caused by low serotonin levels, such as depression, insomnia, anxiety, suicide, migraines, PMS, obsessive/compulsive behavior, stress, obesity, and addiction. L-tryptophan is close in chemical association to 5-HTP; however, L-tryptophan has been banned from the U. S. market over controversial issues of safety, whereas, 5-HTP has been deemed safe and effective because it is a natural way to treat these conditions.
